As an assistant language teacher (ALT) at Interac, applicants will work in elementary, junior high, and high schools throughout Japan. An applicant's job is twofold: language instructor and cultural ambassador. Applicants can expect to teach classes on their own, with a Japanese teacher present to help manage the classroom. Although there are three types of Japanese schools, applicants can reasonably expect to teach in at least two. ALT is a title coined by the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) to describe native-level speakers of English working in Japanese classrooms. With rare exception, as an Interac ALT, applicants are not a member of the school's' staff but an employee of Interac, and therefore, applicants will work under the guidance of Interac. Interac accepts applications from outside Japan all year round. However, in general, Interac annually recruits from outside Japan during two seasons: spring and fall. These seasons coincide with the Japanese school year, which begins in April, and the end of the extended summer vacation which ends in late-August. As an Interac ALT (Assistant Language Teacher) in Japan, you will most likely receive a gross annual salary of approximately ¥2.4 ~ ¥3.0 million per year. Interac pays their English teacher salaries in equal monthly payments. This translates to approximately $17,200 – $21,500 (November 2022 rates). Applicants are responsible for organizing and funding their own transportation to Japan, including airfare.
