The Institute for Humane Studies (IHS) at George Mason University is the leading institute in higher education dedicated to championing classical liberal ideas and the scholars who advance them. Awarded on a rolling basis, the Expense Support Grant provides funding to students and faculty who are researching and teaching within the classical liberal tradition inside the bounds of the social sciences and humanities. Commonly supported research and career-advancing activities include the following: travel for conference presentations, job interviews, and archival research research collaboration and hiring a research assistant journal submission fees purchase of data sets book publication expenses (e.g. copy editing, indexing) application fees for PhD programs Scholars are welcome to submit applications for other expenses not mentioned here. IHS cannot subsidize research stipends, tuition, time buy-outs, indirect costs, institutional overhead, or living expenses. The maximum award amount per grant is $5,000. Re-applicants cannot receive more than $10,000 in funding during an academic year.

Eligibility: applicants must be full-time students or faculty at an accredited college or university applications must be submitted six weeks before expense is incurred retroactive expenses are ineligible applications may only pertain to one project (multiple applications are welcomed) Preference will be given to research directly tied to IHS areas of focus and to applicants from North America and Europe.
