The Department of Space, Earth and Environment contains five divisions, with research and education spanning from global challenges related to sustainability and energy supply to astronomy and space sciences. The department is host to two major infrastructures, Onsala Space Observatory and Chalmers Power Central, and consist of about 250 employees.

Project description

The Group for Advanced Receiver Development (GARD) carries out research in the field of Terahertz technology and instrumentation for environmental sciences and radio astronomy, within the Onsala Space Observatory division at the department of Space, Earth and Environment. GARD research activities include elements of low-temperature physics, superconducting electronics, material science and thin-film technology. Being an internationally recognized research group, with its state-of-art Terahertz instrumentation, GARD was and is participating in large-scale international projects, such as Herschel HIFI, ALMA and APEX.

As a PostDoc with us at GARD, you will be involved in development of quasioptical solutions and receiver systems aiming to achieve ultra-wideband RF and IF performance components for next generation instruments for OSO, APEX, ALMA, and EHT.

Major responsibilities

  • Design and simulations of quasi-optical systems and/or design and simulations of cryogenic receiver systems
  • Simulations of waveguide structures and circuits in HFSS
  • Report writing
  • Writing and publication of scientific articles, participation in scientific conferences
  • Involvement in teaching activies for courses at master and undergraduate level

Qualifications

We are looking for you with a PhD degree in electrical engineering, applied physics, terahertz technology or materials science. You should also have:

  • Hand-on experience in at least of one of the three following area:
    • Quasi-optics design at mm-wave-Thz frequencies
    • Mechanical design of cryogenic structures/components
    • Electromagnetics or high frequency electronics
  • Experience with numerical simulation software, e.g., HFSS
  • High motivation and ability to work in a team
  • Good proficiency in English (written and oral)

It would be of great advantage for you to have previous experience in low temperature physics or superconducting electronics or Terahertz instrumentation, in development and/or experimentally. Good proficiency in Swedish and previous teaching experience are also considered assets. We expect and appreciate a high level of ambition.
